BIG RAPIDS – Like old times.
Julia Waltz had five goals including four in the first half to spark BR to a 5-0 lead at the intermission and an 8-0 Central State Activities Association victory on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium.
Waltz scored 1:51 into the net after a surge down field. She also scored 9:38 into the half for a 2-0 lead. She hit the hattrick at 15:40 of the first half for a 3-0 advantage. It was Kyra Couch’s turn at 20:31 for a 4-0 advantage.
Waltz’s fourth goal came with 22:50 to play in the half.
Hadley Fox scored 1:11 into the second half for a 6-0 lead. About 10 minutes later, senior Hailee Latorski converted on a long shot that dropped over the head of Lakeview goalie Rhyen Korytkowski and found its way into the net for the 7-0 lead.
“I got a perfect pass from one of the new girls,” Lotarski said. “She was in the right spot.”
Waltz scored with 20:17 to play to end game.
“It was really our passing to the midfield that did it,” Waltz said. “We had open lanes because the defense was really spread out. It made it easier for people to find us and finishing was a key.”
Big Rapids is 7-9.
“I think the last couple of conference losses against Newaygo and Tri County, I didn’t think we played bad, it’s just that we made mistakes at bad parts of the game and they capitalized on it,” Big Rapids coach Curt Ray said. “Both games we out-shot them. The opportunities were there.
“We’ve struggled a little bit this year with finishing. But we’ve had a tough schedule against teams we’ve played. Mount Pleasant, teams like that have a lot of depth. This is the first year in a long time Big Rapid girls soccer isn’t controlling everything. I don’t think it’s a lack of not playing well. It’s a part of the game. We out-shot Newaygo and we out shot Tri County. But in the important stat of shooting goals, we didn’t do that.”
The Cardinals will play at home on Friday against Sparta for senior night.
“We just have to keep passing to the middle and find lanes,” Waltz said.
